Trail Description:

The Graveyard Fields Loop Trail is probably one of the most popular stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway. During summer months on weekends, I have seen cars packed along the road as the entire parking area is full. Catch this trail during the week for less of a crowd!

Apart from the number of people at Graveyard Fields, this is an awesome trail. Not too difficult, it takes you along the Yellowstone Prong of the West Fork of the Pigeon River, and gives you access to several very beautiful waterfalls. The Graveyard Fields Trail actually consists of three segments. The first, which is paved 80% of the way, takes you to the Yellowstone Prong of the Pigeon River and has a sturdy footbridge that takes you across the river. This bridge is OK and folks who are squeamish about crossing small bridges need not worry about this one.

Once across the river, you can head upstream (left) toward the upper falls. This trail is beautiful, and so are the falls! The landscape at Graveyard Fields is quite unique from most other stops along the Blue Ridge Parkway.

If you head downstream (right), it's a short, quite windy little trail that leads you down no lie --- 470,000,000 or so steps to the lower falls, also, a magnificent view.

Length of Trail:

.2 miles to Yellowstone Prong
1.6 miles to the Upper Falls
.3 miles to the Second Falls

Rating of Difficulty:

Easy Trail
Easy to slightly moderate...

Very unique scenery compared to other parts of the Blue Ridge Parkway, worth the stop and great for taking the kids along!

Directions to Trail head:

From Asheville (heading South): Blue Ridge Parkway to mile marker 418.8. The parking area is on the right (can't miss the 1,000,000 cars).
